Meenakshi Amman temple is a wonderful feat of ancient engineering which is situated in the Temple city of Madurai, Tamil Nadu. It is stretched to the southern bank of glittering river, Vaigai. This majestic temple is also famous as Meenakshi Sundareswarar and Tiru aalavaai. Meenakshi indicates Goddess, Parvati, and Sundareswarar refers to powerful Lord Shiva and hence the name of this exquisite temple was derived.

Different people have distinct belief about South India Temple. If you go with the mythology, the foundation of it was laid by Lord Indra. It is said, that Lord Indra found a svayambbu lingam, an emblem of Lord Shiva, in a lush green forest named Kadambavanam during an odyssey to chuck out of his bad deeds. He enshrined this sacred lingam in Meenakshi temple. But according to some books and pious people believe that Lord Shiva along with his devotes came to this city, Madurai, in order to marry the Pandeya leader’s daughter, Meenakshi. Meenakshi stands for the one who governs the whole world with eyesight. Goddess Parvati was married to supreme and powerful Meenakshi Temple – An ideal way to reach the God and get the extreme reliefLord Shiva at Madurai. Both of them, Goddess Paravati and Lord Shiva governed Madurai for a very long period. This temple is deemed one of the most holy homes of Goddess Parvati, others are- Akilandeswari in Thiruvanaikaval, Kamakshi in Kanchipuram as well as Vishalakshi in Varanasi.

As we go with the history, it is believed that Meenakshi temple was deteriorated during Muslim’s regime in 1310 but in the course of times as the Hindu leaders came back into power they renovated it. During the sovereignty of most influential king, Thirumalai Naicker, this temple was meticulously reconstructed. Now-a-days, CE and HR departments in the state Tamil Nadu, look after this remarkable temple.

This amazingly designed temple is immaculate epitome of Dravidian architecture. Meenakshi temple encompasses a vast area almost forty five acres which is colossal complex with oodles of enclosures bordered by lofty walls. You can witness the tremendous beauty of twelve gateways towers surrounding the temple which are garlanded with fascinating carving which portray the Lord Siva and Goddess Parvati stories, and mesmerizing painted sculptures. Gold plated glistening Vimanam adds more exquisiteness to this shrine. The enchanting halls in this temple such as Puthu Mandpam, Meenakshi Nayakkar Mandapam, Kalyana Mandapam, Iruttu Mandaoam, Viravasantharaya Mandapm etc cast a spell on every pilgrim for sure. There are many temple tanks and ponds inside and around this shrine. The pilgrims who come to visit this scared shrine are mostly the Lord Shiva’s followers. Devotees worship the deities, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, six times a day and exhibit their love and reverence for them. Meenakshi temple is opened for visitors from 5 am to 12:30 pm and in the evening from 4 onwards to 9:30 pm. Hordes of pious devotees all around the world gather at this holy shrine every year in the month of April to May to celebrate Meenaskhi Tirukalyanam festival with great fervor. The most interesting thing about this shrine is that it is involved in many social activities such as distributing free food to poor people, free education, free marriage schemes, shelter to feeble and poor people as well as free moral and spiritual education.
